5 Reasons for Women to Strength Train by Ian McGriff, P.T
Resistance training, strength training, weight training, whatever you
want to call it, it’s important, and not simply for men who want to get
bigger, but women can also enjoy the benefits of a slimmer, sexier body
through some form of resistance training. Cardio cannot do it alone,
sure you can loose weight and body fat through cardio exercise, but you
won’t get the tone, the definition, the sexy lines that you can get
from adding strength training a minimum one day a week. Here are five
reasons that every woman should increase their strength to increase
body.
1. Tone and definition.
Done properly, strength training can enhance a women’s form by defining
and toning those muscles that women seek to enhance the most. A
shapelier sexier back and shoulders, better defined legs, a slimmer
midsection, all these you can achieve through a regularly strength
session at least one day a week.
2. Fight against Osteoporosis
Women are diagnosed with Osteoporosis. But you can fight back against
osteoporosis with resistance training! When you strength train you are
placing pressure on your bones to support or work against the weight
you are lifting, therefore making your bones stronger. The more often
you apply this pressure to your bones the stronger they will become and
the less you will have to worry about osteoporosis!
3. Prevent Injuries
Strength training doesn’t just make your bones and muscles stronger, it
also makes your joints, hips, knees, elbows, more secure and therefore
safer! As you train you make the muscles around these joints stronger
and therefore have created a method of preventing injury. Bad knees?
Strengthen your quads and hamstrings and see you pain dissipate as a
result!
4. Increase your Metabolic Rate and Lean Muscle Mass
Strength training is one of the best ways to increase your metabolic
rate. Increasing your metabolic rate means you are expending more
calories per day. You can increase this expenditure by increasing your
lean muscle mass. As you increase your strength you create more lean
muscle mass and with every pound of lean muscle mass you expend 35-50
kilocalories per day! That means if you have 15 pounds of lean muscle
mass you will expend 525-750 kilocalories per day!
5. Age Gracefully
Resistance training allows you to maintain or increase your muscles
strength and as a result you are able to fight off age longer. The
stronger and more vibrant your body is the longer you will be able to
stay active and maintain a better quality of life as you age!
Strength training has been proven to help women get the bodies they,
whether it’s slim and sexy or safe and functional, start resistance
