Goal Setting by Ian McGriff, Personal Trainer

For some of use goal setting, in regards to our health and fitness levels, can be very difficult. Often when I meet with new clients and discuss with them what they want to work towards, I get general, undefined answers like “loose weight”, “tone- up”, or “get healthier”. Now, while these are all good goals and things one can work towards, we need more finite ideas about what we need, or want, to accomplish.

“I wanna loose weight.” Ok, my first question in response is then, “How much weight do you think you want to loose?” and again I get an uncertain answer like “maybe 20-25 pounds...”

I work under the assumption that each person I meet with or talk to about changing their bodies, has an idea about what they would like to change. Therefore, I ask them straight out, “What do you want improve or change about yourself? How do you see yourself looking in 5 months or a year? Now, what do you look like? How do you feel?” and from there it is much easier to get a more developed, more defined goal and sometimes even the reasons people seek my out.

So how can this help you set your goals? Ask yourself these same questions. If you want to loose weight, be specific, after all you are much more likely to be honest with yourself than with someone you hardly know.

Say you want to loose 30 pounds, now the key is creating a time frame to loose it in. Often times I meet with people who say “I’ve been in the gym for 6 months and I’ve only lost 4 pounds, what am I doing wrong?” It’s not that you are doing anything wrong, it’s that you let the goal of 30 pounds hang there with no support. The next step then is to create a time frame to loose the weight. For example, 3 months to loose 30 pounds, which averages out to 10 pounds a month, and approximately 2 to 2.5 pounds a week (which happens to be the recommended amount of weight to loose a week by the American College of Sports Medicine) Now you have created an objective with short and long term goals automatically build in to your overall goal. You are now able to work towards 2 pounds a week, rather than 30 total pounds.

Goal setting is very important in establishing and maintaining your physical health. Through goal setting you give yourself an objective to work towards with specific targets and end points to monitor your progress. It is the ultimate way for you to create the body you have always wanted. Want to loose weight before the class reunion? Want to run the marathon in Chicago? Want to add 30 pounds to your bench press? All of these can be accomplished with specific goal setting. I guarantee results and the best workouts of your life.
